14 parties want Parliament to discuss Zanzibar impasse
Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) chairman, Jecha Salum Jecha
POLITICAL parties which have no lawmakers in the House have called for a thorough discussion on the political impasse in the isles instead of delving on the Tegeta Escrow scandal.
At least fourteen political parties that took part in the last
year’s polls have openly protested the decision announced by Zanzibar
Electoral Commission (ZEC) chairman, Jecha Salum Jecha, to set a date
for re-running elections in the Isles following after he nullified the
results in late October.
At the moment the parties have joined the movement by Zanzibar’s
main opposition party, the Civic United Front (CUF), which has claimed
lead in the embattled elections.
During a meeting with journalists on Monday in Dar es Salaam, all
the secretaries general of parties with no representatives in the
National Assembly said they were against the decision to re-run the
polls.
“We want the National Assembly to pay much attention to issues of
greater public concern other than debating earlier resolution made
against the Independent Power Tanzania Limited (IPTL). We’re all aware
of what happened in the last parliamentary debates on the Escrow account
scandal … this debate should not be allowed to resurface and instead
work on solutions for the political situation in Zanzibar take
precedence,” Renatus Muambi, the secretary of Alliance told reporters.
Last week, almost two months after ZEC chairman nullified the
election results in Zanzibar, he categorically set March 20 as the date
for the poll re-run.
However, the main opposition party - CUF supported by a Coalition
of People’s Constitution (Ukawa) had consistently demanded for the
completion of the tallying process and the winner be declared for the
election that was categorised by both domestic and international
observers as free and fair.
Nonetheless, the statement by the 14-parties compliment the
position held by former foreign affairs minister, Bernard Membe, who
challenged the decision to nullify the entire results as “undemocratic
and damaging the country’s posture in the international arena.”
The parties which attended the meeting include NRA, AFP, SAU, CCK, CHAUSTA, DEMOKRASIA MAKINI and ADC.
Others were UPDP, AFP, TLP, UDP, TADEA, JAHAZI ASILIA and CHAUMA.
They observed that since they were not part of the mediation
process between CUF secretary general Maalim Seif Sharif Hamad and CCM’s
Dr Ali Mohammed Shein, then it was not democratic for the ZEC to
organise the re-run of the polls.
“They have made nearly 10 private meetings but they didn’t come to
an agreement and what was discussed remains secret. We want the National
Assembly to give the public satisfactory answers on this burning
question,” he said.
There were no clarifications from either the Parliament head of
communications Owen Mwandubya or its clerk, Dr Thomas Kashililah.
